Do carpenter insects cause serious damage?

Over time, yes. They return to the same holes annually and tunnel deeper each season. Untreated galleries weaken logs structurally and invite moisture infiltration. Early treatment breaks the cycle.

Does staining actually deter insects?

Borate-infused stains make the wood toxic to wood-boring insects. It is the most effective long-term deterrent. Unstained or oil-based-stained logs are significantly more vulnerable.

Is exterior log mold a health risk?

Exterior mold is mostly cosmetic. Interior mold, or mold at log-foundation contact, can be a health concern and must be addressed immediately. We flag any interior mold findings explicitly.

Does staining prevent mold from coming back?

A quality mold-inhibiting stain significantly reduces recurrence. But the root cause (the moisture source) must be identified and fixed first. Stain alone will not stop mold if water keeps reaching the wood.

TREATMENT PROTOCOL

How we treat it.

STEP 01

Inspect & Map

Mold mapping and pest entry point identification. We examine shaded walls, north faces, vegetation contact zones, and drainage patterns. Carpenter insect holes probed for tunnel depth and seasonal return evidence.

STEP 02

Mold Kill Treatment

EPA-registered mold kill solution applied to all affected surfaces. Dwell time respected. Dead mold neutralized at the cell level, not bleached over, which leaves the spore structure intact and allows rapid re-colonization.

STEP 03

Neutralizer Wash

Mold kill residue neutralized and flushed. Surface cleaned to bare wood. Mold cannot establish on a clean, dry, properly finished surface, but it will return if the moisture source is not addressed.

STEP 04

Pest Treatment

All insect entry points treated and filled. Carpenter insect holes: borate applied into the tunnel, plugged with matching material, and surface-matched. The return cycle is broken.

STEP 05

Borate Preservative

Applied to all affected logs and surrounding tissue. Penetrates wood fiber and persists indefinitely in dry conditions. Toxic to fungi, mold, and wood-boring insects. Non-toxic to humans and pets.

STEP 06

Mold-Resistant Finish

Water-based, mold-inhibiting stain system applied. The moisture source that caused the infection is documented in the discharge notes, because mold always returns if the moisture does not stop.
