PREPARATION / SURFACE RESTORATION

Prep is the procedure.

Most stain failures trace back to inadequate surface preparation. We use crushed-glass blasting: silica-free, biodegradable, and the only method that opens wood pores deep enough for premium stain systems to perform as engineered.

TREATMENT PROTOCOL

How we treat it.

STEP 01

Surface Assessment

Log species, existing coating condition, and wood density assessed. Blasting specification selected based on what is on the wall and what needs to come off. Hybrid approach (blast plus sand) determined if needed.

STEP 02

Site Protection

6mm poly ground sheets installed. Windows, doors, and fixtures masked. Landscaping protected. The site is fully contained before a single grain of media hits the wall.

STEP 03

Crushed-Glass Blasting

50/100 grit recycled glass propelled at controlled pressure. Removes old coatings, UV-grey wood, and mold staining in one pass. Reaches corners, grooves, and hand-scribed profiles that sanding cannot access.

STEP 04

Mechanical Sanding

Applied to interior surfaces, flat timbers, and detail work where blasting is too aggressive. Homes that have been previously sanded often get a hybrid treatment to avoid over-removing wood fiber.

STEP 05

Brightener Wash

pH-balanced brightener applied after blasting. Neutralizes tannins, lifts remaining stain residue, and prepares the grain for maximum stain adhesion. Not optional: skipping this step compromises stain performance.

STEP 06

Moisture Verification

Logs allowed to dry fully. Moisture content read at multiple points and verified below the threshold required by the stain manufacturer before application begins. We do not stain wet logs.
